Almost as soon as I began, I knew I was losing them. I was in a retail banking branch, trying to explain the benefits of our new collaboration platform to the staff. And they were skeptical. “We’re very busy with clients. We don’t have time for other things.” “How much does it cost? We’re very focused on profitability.” Words like “Jive” or “social intranet” or “micro-blogging” didn’t mean much to them. I quickly needed to change my approach. “What’s the point?” The …

Fifteen years ago today I scared the bejesus out of Joanne by talking about “our future” over a romantic dinner. Since we had only been dating for a few months Joanne panicked and, after dinner, held long, torturous phone calls with her mother and sister. Here every word and nuance was examined in minute detail; numerous scenarios were teased out, discussions were held on whether she was being honest with me…or herself, and whether she should stop seeing me. Obviously, being a guy, I was oblivious …

This morning I was gratified to read that Lamar Smith, the chief sponsor of SOPA, has finally agreed to pull the bill that would have had a major chilling effect on the most innovative platform known to man.

Had this bill been signed into law Internet companies would have to check any user-generated content before it could be posted if they are to avoid the risk of being shut down, slowing the sharing of ideas and information to a virtual crawl.

The Internet is safe…for now.

Smith also released a statement on Friday and, as a public service, I have added sub-titles to help the hard of understanding. Here is his statement:

“We need to revisit the approach on how best to address the problem of foreign [and domestic, but that doesn’t sound as scary…can we include Al Qaeda somewhere here?] thieves that steal and sell American inventions and products.

The problem of online piracy is too big to ignore [because the music and film industries give me and my friends lots of money and opportunities to hang out with movie stars. I like Angelina Jolie ].

American intellectual property industries [including ones that provide cool Internet ideas that will be lost if my bill goes through] provide 19 million high-paying jobs and account for more than 60% of U.S. exports [most of which is not from the music and film industries and is not affected by online piracy]. The theft of America’s intellectual property costs the U.S. economy more than $100 billion annually and results in the loss of thousands of American jobs. Congress cannot stand by and do nothing while American innovators and job creators are under attack.

“The online theft of American intellectual property is no different than the theft of products from a store. It is illegal and the law [which we already have plenty of] should be enforced both in the store and online.

“The Committee will continue work with copyright owners, Internet companies, financial institutions to develop proposals that combat online piracy and protect America’s intellectual property [we haven't given up yet and will attach this to some other bill that won't get voted down]. We welcome input from all organizations and individuals who have an honest difference of opinion about how best to address this widespread problem [and drum up campaign contributions].

The Committee remains committed to finding a solution to the problem of online piracy that protects American intellectual property and innovation.” [I’ll be back ]

Rumor has it that they are already working on attaching the text of SOPA to a child indecency bill, that no congressman would vote against!

I recently discovered that 90% of people are wasting time searching the Internet because they don't know one very simple trick. In fact, analysis suggests that people that know this trick are, on average, 12% faster than other people using when searching the web. That's like having a DVR and still watching the ads. Continue reading →

Since the DVR arrived we almost never watch live TV. In fact, on the rare occasions when I do, I still zipping through the ads and can’t understand why the fast fast-forward button has stopped working. When I catch myself watching ads needlessly I curse and wonder if, one day nearer my death, I’ll regret all those wasted moments.

And yet I recently discovered that 90% of people are wasting time searching the Internet because they don’t know one very simple trick. In fact, analysis suggests that people who know this trick are, on average, 12% faster than other people using when searching the web.

So…here it is. On any web page pressing Ctrl-F will bring up a search box where you can type in a word and immediately jump to that on the page. Go ahead, try it now to look for the word amazing…I’ll wait.

Not only does this magic key work on ALL web browsers, but also in office tools, PDF files, and pretty much anywhere else where there is text to be searched.

And there are many other keys that can save you a lot of time too and, since I’m on a roll, I’ll throw a few of my favorites in here:

Ctrl-Z = Undo. This works even in places where no undo button exists. I can’t tell you how many times this baby has saved me.

Ctrl-A = Select All. The next time you need to select everything in a document or web page, just make sure your cursor is in the text you need and use this.

Ctrl-P = Print. I think that one is self explanatory but, again, it works in many places where no print button exists.

Using just these four simple keystrokes will save you hours. The only question now is what are you going to do with all that free time?

A little before Christmas I attended an evening of music put on by the New Jersey Choral Society. I enjoy these events for several reasons:

I’m a music lover and they really are excellent.

Because I used to sing with them and always see old friends.

Because it scores huge brownie points with my wife, who still sings with them.

Since the concert was a sell out arriving early was strongly suggested. Instead a combination of returning visiting children and feeding my offspring ensured I not only arrived late, but after the concert had started. Fully expecting to find myself in a seat with a great view of a supporting column I was instead ushered to a seat in the last row, right next to the middle aisle, affording it both an unobstructed view and plenty of room.

How could this prime seat still be empty in such a packed house? I could see it surrounded by a golden halo and with angels singing. Or perhaps that was just NJCS in their glory. I smugly took my seat and settled in for another glorious concert.

In hindsight little alarm bells should have gone off. I’ve ridden enough New York subways to know that an empty seat on a packed train usually means a urine soiled hobo as a neighbor.

The first number was a beautiful pianissimo piece and I let the warm, soft music wash over me…right up to the point where I heard “MOMMY!” I looked to my right to see a toddler loudly talking with the obliviousness of surroundings that only exists in the very young and the very old.

As a father of 3 I wasn’t too concerned. His parents would no doubt quiet him down or remove him from earshot if that proved too difficult (I know I would have).

Sadly that was not the case this time as the boy continued to chatter with little more than the occasional “Shhh” from the parents and more than a few disapproving looks from the paying members of the audience. Then a new sound was added to the mix, the insistent cry of a hungry baby followed after a brief pause by a loud thumping as the father attempted to burp the child. Now if only the thumping had been in time with the music…

Near the end of the concert the baby started to cry again and, as the father reached for another bottle, he accidentally hit his phone which immediately shouted “SAY A COMMAND!!” at full volume. That was the last straw for one audience member who turned around and expressed his disapproval with some choice words, finally causing the father gather his belongings and head out. Sadly the concert ended a few minutes later.

For most of the people in that part of the church the concert had been significantly marred. But there’s a lesson for all of us here – Beware the Empty Seat!

The “empty seat” could be on the subway, in a concert, a can’t lose business opportunity, an open job or a date who seems to have it all. Somewhere along the way someone else has decided that it was too much trouble and passed by. So before jumping into something that seems too good to be true it’s worth taking a moment to look around to see what dangers are lurking. Maybe these are things you can live with, in which case go for it. Just don’t do it blindly.

As the saying goes – if something looks too good to be true, it usually is.

Happy New Year!

Microsoft wants to stifle innovation in the Open Source space because it knows it can’t compete. Their intention is clear - if they can’t beat them with innovation, then they will do it with litigation.

Patents were originally created to spur innovation by ensuring that people could create without fear of losing control of their inventions.

-

However patentsare being increasingly used by big companies to put a stranglehold on innovation instead.

-

Corporations are falling over themselves to acquire patents for the sole purpose of keeping the status quo.

-

A great example of this is the $4.5 billion recently bid by a consortium including Apple and Microsoft for a “war chest” of patents owned by Nortel to keep them out of the hands of Google.

-

And, once again, Microsoft is leading the fight against innovation by using the patents it has acquired to restrict the use of Android – exactly the sort of behaviours that have landed them in such hot water in the past.

-

Using acquired patents Microsoft have forced companies that produce Android devices to pay ‘license fees’ for each device sold – increasing the cost to the company and the consumer.Until recently those deals were kept private as part of the agreements made (coerced?) with device makers, creating exactly the sort of fear, uncertainty and doubt that I’m sure Microsoft wanted.

-

And the types of innovations that Microsoft are using to extort these fees? How about the ability to display a graphic while a downloading is occurring.

Fortunately Barnes & Nobel have refused to sign and, in the process, are bringing the details into the light. In its response to Microsoft’s complaint, B&N says that Microsoft is trying to dominate Android with “exorbitant license fees and absurd licensing restrictions,” that is more than Microsoft charges for the entirety of Windows Phone 7.

B&N has asked the U.S. Justice Department to review Microsoft’s patent-licensing agreements with makers of Android devices, saying “Microsoft is embarking on a campaign of asserting trivial and outmoded patents against manufacturers of Android devices.” Its attorney Peter Barbur said in an Oct. 17 letter to a DOJ official: “Microsoft is attempting to raise its rivals’ costs in order to drive out competition and to deter innovation in mobile devices. … Microsoft’s conduct poses serious antitrust concerns.”

Let’s be clear – if your subscription has expired then you are NOT protected.

But who can blame them? Anti-virus software is expensive.

Fortunately there are companies that offer great anti-virus solutions for free, and replacing your existing AV is easy enough for anyone to handle. Here’s how to save money and make sure you are always up to date.

It is no secret that I have not been a fan of the walled garden that Steve Jobs created around Apple in recent years.

While I can appreciate that the tight control helps ensure a consistent (and I have to say – beautifully designed) user experience, my geeky tendencies fight against it.

But with his recent passing I started musing about how it all began. How did I get started in the tech industry in the first place? The results surprised me and, when I really think about it, Steve Jobs was a big part of my life and my career – so here’s the story…

I grew up in East London which, for those not in the know, is the poor part. Even compared to our neighbors we didn’t have much, and money for education was a luxury we couldn’t afford.

Since my chances of going to university were slim to none (and calling it slim is pushing it) I found myself leaving school at the tender age of 16.

No worries though, I had a plan to become a plasterer. Yup. Me. I even prepared for that by getting an “O level” in plastering (sic).

Reality dealt me a swift slap in the face on that plan when I found out that I had left it too late to apply to the local vocational college and all the spots were gone.

With very few options and, with the winds of fate blowing strongly, I found myself in a very small company that was working to promote the nascent micro-computer industry (as they were called back then).

I liked that job, even though the pay was awful and I spent 50% of my pay on commuting. The people were nice, the receptionist taught me to type, and sometimes they had left over goodies from meetings! The only problem was…I was bored. I had far too much time on my hands and needed something to do.

Sitting in the middle of the office gathering dust was an Apple IIe – Steve Jobs original masterpiece. It had a manual, some floppy disks, and a color screen. Awesome.

With nothing else to do I sat down and started teaching myself to program. It was easy to use – if a little shy on help when I got things wrong (Syntax error being about the most it would give me). But before I knew it I had various programs running, fancy graphical shapes whizzing around, and I was looking for a new challenge.

Seeing what I had done one of the consultants in the office signed me up for a government-funded college program that he found in the paper. I managed to get in and the rest, as they say is history.

Without that Apple IIe I doubt that I would have started in the tech industry, and that would have changed everything.

I may not have known Steve Jobs personally, but he affected my life in ways that I cannot begin to fathom, and I’m sure many other people feel the same. His creations have democratized technology and, with it, created a whole new world.

So, since life has been good to me, I have to swallow my pride and say a belated “Thanks” Steve. And if I have fought against some of your later creations well…it’s your own fault…you created me.

Rest in peace.
